It will be another recorded event, which is a such a letdown after the now Legendary live event a few E3’s ago but Konami should have some good stuff to show.
Platform: XBOX 360, PS3, Microsoft Windows
Developer: Digital Extremes
Publisher: Namco Bandai Games
[Contains Minor Spoilers]

Captain’s Log: It’s starting to feel oddly unfair to review licensed games, since so rarely do they impress anyone to the point where they’ll admit to loving it and shove it into their friends hands to play. A few licensed gems include the Batman: Arkham series and Telltale’s The Walking Dead game which were phenomenal in their own rights. Star Trek is different for me [because I wanted to adore it] for a number of reasons that won’t make me bias towards the game, because I won’t hold it’s hand. I’m a Star Trek fan, the daughter of a father who is a huge Trekkie, a father whose groomsmen and himself wore Vulcan ears at his wedding. I bonded over TOS and TNG with my dad, and I even started flipping my plastic headbands over my eyes pretending I was Geordi La Forge when I was in Elementary school. Not to mention, I remember him giving me the Vulcan Nerve Pinch in grocery stores to be funny or maybe I was being a little brat… who knows. I assure you, I wasn’t rendered unconscious by it.

I wanted to love Star Trek to bits and was excited to get my hands on it. Everyone was comparing it to games that I already loved, and even though I knew it wouldn’t likely be anywhere near Mass Effect [yes, it was endlessly compared to Mass Effect, I know]. Star Trek does some small things well, yet they are sadly overshadowed by how problematic the game is. It seriously hurts to say the game made me angry, disappointed and saddened by how it left me after I was done with it. Actually, no, I didn’t finish it and I’ll tell you why. I was probably less than half an hour from the ending and the game just kept saying I had died when I clearly was perfectly healthy in-game. This was never fixed nor could I figure out was wrong. I had done everything possible within my means to try to fix this horrific bug, but the end result was putting the game away to never see the light of day.

Star Trek did do some things that completely save it from being the ultimate worst. The cast of the new J.J Abrams Star Trek films voiced their characters, some I had to make sure on the IMDB because they didn’t do such a great job. Both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto [Kirk and Spock respectively] did admirable jobs and you could tell they cared about giving fans their best. The dialogue and banter between the two is entertaining, and harks back to the show and movies well. The story is it’s own, and tries to tie the first J.J movie to the second by giving insight on what the crew members of the USS Enterprise are doing while we weren’t watching movies about them. It wasn’t the best storyline in the world, but you get some insight on what the Vulcan’s were doing to help rebuild after their planet was obliterated in the first movie [spoilers?].

Star Trek: The Game looks old, the graphics look like they were in the era of games from 6 or so years ago. It’s clunky and doesn’t hold up well to games that have come out alongside it. Dead Island: Riptide looks better and we all know how I felt about that game. Though, I do admit that the interior of the Enterprise does look a bit nice and at times Kirk doesn’t look too bad. The weaponry is just… okay, it wasn’t spectacular and more often than not you’ll favor the phaser only, especially when you can start to upgrade to make it OP. Now, here’s a real ass-kicker of a problem, the co-op option. I’m a huge fan of localized co-op, though for Star Trek I went solo and it was a pain. The AI of your partner, be it Spock or Kirk is absurdly terrible. He’ll constantly get in the way, stand at the top of climbable environments and ladders blocking your way to get up. Other times he won’t want to do anything or even follow you, he’ll just stop and stand in one place… now an AI giving up in their own game is a bad sign. If that isn’t enough, your AI partner can get stuck in a running loop or find that he needs to head into a direction blocked by a wall, convinced that they can get through the blockade with sheer determination.

Here’s an aspect I thought I would go bonkers over and love, when I heard about it before the game released. The Tricorder, you guys. I wanted to scan all the things and was extremely disappointed when it was so limited, it was sad. I’m not some disillusioned fan, I didn’t actually think I could scan everything in the Star Trek universe, but I had thought it would have been more than an item or two every section of the game. By the end, I ultimately gave up on doing the deed and forgot about it and man, did I wish it was properly integrated into the game. The Tricorder is wicked, I used to play with my dad’s replica Tricorder as a kid so the fact that the game made it nearly useless is a big negative.

The enemy in the game, the Gorn, felt out of place and looked odd. Though, to be fair, they always looked odd, but giving them the appearance of your typical raptor/dinosaur monster was silly and downplayed what they were in the series. Also, The AI of the enemies was just as bad as your partner’s, some never went into cover, and some disappeared into walls or sank into the floor never to be seen again.

Do you, at least, get to man the Enterprise and get into some spaceship battling? Eh, you kinda do, but it’s not what you want or what you would think it would be. You never fly the ship, but you man the turrets and lasers while keeping an eye on your shields. This sequence is never fully explained and will probably take you a few tries to figure everything out and get the hang of. You have to bring your shields up with a button, then let it go while trying to take out enemies unprotected at the same time. It’s irritating and frustrating and let’s just say I’m not on good terms with the ship sequence, we are not friends.

I don’t recommend this game, not even as a rental. If you’re a fan, a Trekkie or just like nice games to play, then stay far away from Star Trek: The Game… you’ll be much better off without it. The bugs and glitches are endless, the AI is a sad attempt at having a partner or even enemies and there are too many disappointing aspects that I wanted to see done right. As I previously stated, I wasn’t able to even finish it, as my game wouldn’t allow me to and I gave up. I’ve never given up on a game, but I did on this one. Now, I’m going to go grab a beer and forget that this game ever existed.

Potential good look at the new female and male Pokemon trainers for Pokemon X&Y. Also, 4 new Pokemon to absorb… I’m digging the Panda. A lot of small detailed tidbits are in the new Corocoro magazine, like the region will be named Karos and be based on France.

On top of that, looks like you can VERY minimally [according to the photo] customize your character? At the very least there will be default players to roll around as.

Watch_Dogs is coming to PS4 and is looking like the ‘official’ version you’ll want to get. Or at least the only next-gen version one that we know of at the moment. That will likely change come May 21st as Microsoft unveils its own next-gen system. Until then, check some new footage of Watch_Dogs.

Screens for Telltale’s new game The Wolf Among Us looks...

Screens for Telltale’s new game The Wolf Among Us looks amazing! It could not look more like the game was ripped from the pages of a comic book. The Wolf Among Us is based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series from Vertigo. I’m loving the direction Telltale is going with licensed games, they’re doing it right.

Dead Island Riptide came out this week, completely under most of our radars it seems. Despite this being a sequel and a full retail priced game, it honestly doesn’t feel like one. I played the previous game, alone, and found it entertaining if you can get over the multiple bugs, problematic story-telling, and the main characters. I know that the biggest enjoyment from the first game was playing with others and going zombie hunting, but playing with others has never been my strong point, but I still found my fun. Certain aspects the game did right, weapons having a breaking point and building other types of modified weapons was enjoyable and gave the game a level of difficulty. It had moments that were pretty unique and I enjoyed traversing a zombie infested island, which in itself was different from other infected games. The problem of the first Dead Island was that most of the main characters are boring and one dimensional [save for random gems from Sam B and his Who Do You Voodoo song], and they were hard to get to know. Dead Island was littered with bugs and glitches and in my time playing it, they were never fixed and seemed forgotten.

For Riptide, it’s basically the same game all over again, but on a different island which never really feels too dissimilar to the previous. This hurts Riptide in that the new island feels and is smaller than Banoi and the scenery is never differing from the next. Banoi was definitely far more interesting to explore for a number of reasons as there are upscale resorts, the island’s native tribe’s lands, office buildings and everything in between that. Palanai, the new island, feels disjointed, small and uninteresting. Most side missions and survivor rescues are more or less the same, save them, get a reward and you’re off to the next objective. Hidden benches to fix weapons are all the same, go up a ladder and you get the same room every time. There are many hilarious, but irritating glitches such as zombies rocketing into the sky for no reason and killing them made them float upright above my player’s head. There was far too many instances where I killed an undead in one blow, but the enemy disappeared and I wasn’t able to loot them. Riptide is best described as like an extension DLC for the first, it doesn’t look any better and they haven’t offered anything new with the title.

Riptide isn’t one of those games I would say is terrible, because it’s not, you can still find entertainment while playing especially if you link up with other players to tackle zombies together. The weapons you find are enjoyable, mods are fun, and the weapon breaking points give a sense of tension. There’s satisfaction from going crazy on zombies and dismembering limbs, once I got myself a katana everything was golden in the game. The highlight in Riptide is really fighting off the undead, hordes and special infected prove difficult and trying out new weapons on them is fun, though quickly bland if played for too long. The story gets interesting very briefly when you stumble upon the lab with the scientist, but it’s quickly whisked away right when you want more.

After finishing the game, I’m still glad to have played it. Dead Island is a different experience and while Riptide isn’t polished, it’s still fun. A game can be rocky and unpolished and still be enjoyable and this is a prime example. There are many bugs and I ran across multiple glitches that halted my game often. Frustration hit me quite a few times, especially when the game handed me an unfair game over due to unseen bugs where a survivor died when they actually had not. I wouldn’t recommend buying Riptide, but it’s worth the rental, or if it drops in price it may be justifiable. There are definitely better walking dead games out there.
