I think it’s time we all admit that Capcom has evolved Resident Evil from the survival horror it once was to the action-horror Summer blockbuster event game it is now. Resident Evil 6 is without a doubt the big stupid summer movie you enjoy with friends and leave the cinema with a smile. I’ve only spent about 3 hours with the game (Chris “Falcon Punch” Redfield campaign) but I’m already enjoying it. The old school Resident Evil of PSone days is long gone and I’ve come accept that. Resident Evil is now… this. A big loud brosplosion with some creative monsters and a control scheme that once again forces you to play Resident Evil like no other game on the market.
I’m not going to bullshit, the game has its problems. Plenty of them. The camera is still to close for comfort, the mentioned control scheme isn’t explained to you at all and Capcom needs to attend a meeting of quick time events rehab as soon as possible. The first 15 minutes of the game which are a prelude to the whole of Resident Evil 6 could have easily been done with a simple cut scene. I appreciate watching Capcom’s beautiful work on the MT Framework Engine in action but it all could have been produced in a slick video and saved players the anxiety of some of the most inane quick time events since Ninja Blade.
Most big sites are indeed ripping Resident Evil 6 a new asshole. Do I think it’s completely valid? Not entirely. I’m still early in what is a 27 + hour title; but even with the above mentioned problems, I’m enjoying Capcom’s gargantuan effort on making what is a popcorn game, and just like those Summer blockbuster movies I mentioned, Resident Evil 6 is all about the ride. Cheese, questionable controls and big special effects are all part of the package. It may not please long time fans of the series looking for a return to the slow and creepy horror of old but for an explosion of big epic set-pieces with characters you know and love, Resident Evil 6 is delivering.
If you’re still on the fence and want to see the chaos that is RE6 I’ll be streaming here after 2PM EST
