The Best of the Rest 2011: Shadows of the Damned

Shadows of the Damned is without a doubt the best game that no one played in 2011. If you love Resident Evil 4, then you missed out on its Tarantino and Evil Dead inspired bastard cousin.
Full of vulgar jokes, insane over the top action and some great writing; Shadows of the Damned deserved much more than to be bargain bin fodder. Sadly, EA’s marketing department decided to just push it out the door with no more than a whimper and a fart.
There’s so much to admire in Shadows atmosphere and developer pedigree that it kind of boggles the mind that it went so under the radar. Developed by Suda 51 known for some crazy bat-shit insane games like Killer 7 and the No More Heroes franchise and Shinji Mikami the director behind Resident Evil 4 and Vanquish; Shadows is just top notch quality from the word go.
It also didn’t hurt that it has the best soundtrack of the year thanks to the amazingly talented Akira Yamaoka. Yes, the very same Akira known for producing the Silent Hill soundtracks that haunt all of our dreams.
Garcia Hotspur may not have set the sales charts on fire in 2011, but he and his Johnson worked their way into a special place in my heart. And if there’s any damn justice in this crazy world Shadows of the Damned will become one of those cult classic games much like the source material that inspired it.
